How We Grade a Driveway
A gravel driveway fails for one reason: water goes where it shouldn't. Middle Tennessee's clay-heavy soil and hard spring and fall rains punish any drive without a real crown and working drainage, and simply dumping new gravel on top of a washed-out surface just buys a few weeks. We rebuild the shape and the drainage first, then top it — so the fix actually lasts through multiple rain seasons.
1. Inspect & measure
We walk the full length of the drive, check the crown, find low spots and washouts, and inspect the culvert. Then we measure so the gravel estimate is accurate.
2. Clear & clean drainage
Blocked culverts and clogged side ditches are the number-one cause of washout in Tennessee. We clear or replace them so water has somewhere to go before we touch the surface.
3. Reshape the base
We knock down high spots, pull material back into ruts and potholes, and rebuild a proper crown so water sheds to both sides instead of pooling down the center.
4. Add fresh gravel
Where material is thin or lost, we spread fresh crushed limestone or #57 stone to the right depth and blend it into the existing surface.
5. Compact & finish
We compact the surface so it locks in and holds up to traffic and the next heavy rain, then leave a clean, drivable finish.

A box blade on a compact track loader moves and levels material with a precision no drag box or hand rake can match, and it lets us dial in the crown angle exactly. The tracks spread weight so we can work soft, rain-soaked drives without adding our own ruts to the problem.
